I expected the paper and the product to be straightforward and easy, little did I know they were going to be the complete opposite of what I expected. The paper took some heavy researching and I was double checking my sources to make sure they were reliable/accurate. The paper also took a lot of thinking and brainstorming on what to write about and how to organize the writing. My research paper took a tremendous amount of time and effort but I managed to complete it. My product was even more difficult in my opinion. I had an idea in mind but I ended up changing it because of a technical problem. My product also required heavy researching and a lot of creativity. My mentor was always there to give me advice and help me along the way. From the start, I expected my mentor to be there for me whenever and that was the case for the whole school year. Whenever I needed something from my mentor, she was always there helping me out. My mentor improved my project in many ways and I don't know what I would have done without her. The greatest problem when writing my paper was establishing what to write about. I was drawing a blank on what exactly to write about my topic and I was completely lost. The greatest resource from overcoming this problem was my mentor. My mentor is the one who told me what to write about and how to write. My mentor is the one that shaped my paper and I am very thankful for that. The most surprising information I found among my research was the complexity of defining who is poor and who isn't. I thought it was as simple as looking at how much money a person has, but in reality there is so much more than just that to determine who is poor. What I learned about myself during this project was I would never give up. No matter how many nights I stayed up, no matter how little sleep I got, no matter how tired I was, I would not give up until I was done. I will keep this mentality for the rest of my life; in school, work, or any hard time that comes by. This will help me tremendously and allow me to get work down no matter the circumstances. I plan on continuing this project in the future by taking it another level. What I mean by that is to go over it, revise it, change anything that needs to be changed, and spread the word to people all over the country. And maybe even spread the word all over the world. This project taught me that Islam is incorporated in everything in our lives. It has guidelines/information for everything we do on a daily basis. Islam had the information I needed when researching zakat and it probably has a lot more information for many other topics. What I would do differently for my project is probably plan out a year before how my senior project would be like. If I had planned out everything for my senior project while I was in 11th grade, I believe I would have had a more enjoyable and easy experience with less stress. My advice to next year's seniors would be to plan out everything for your senior project before you start 12th grade. Trust me, it will save a lot of time and effort in the long run. I would give myself an A due to the amount of effort I put into the project and the research I accomplished to finish my paper and product along with the creativity required for my product.
